Fake Medals "For Bravery"

Yes, but real suspensions carry a premium and there is no reason to pay for a real suspension when it is not.

A cable repairman T1BM c/w original suspension typically does not carry a premium over just the medallion of a tankist, rifleman, etc. T1 BM. Personal preference I suppose.

While there's still time ask for the dimensions of the medal; diameter, diameter of the loop, etc. Especially get the thickness. Early bravery medals were markedly thicker than later versions per MONDVOR.

BTW, the ad says that the suspension is not original: "After restoration. Because a native nut and shoe tree are lost, were made new."

BTW, Kolkada, or what we call the "suspension" is very often, for some unknown reason, translated as "shoe tree". If I had a nickle for every time I've seen 'shoe tree' I'd a slightly rich man. :)

Kapusta Norm Wrote:Just for the sake of discussion, I'd like to address the issue of suspensions-whether or real or not. To each his own much like my Big Mac and Quarter Pounder analogy. I can only speak for myself. I don't care whether the suspension is real or not.
I do.
Quote: I think we assume that if the original suspenion is not present, the suspension was created/added by some collector.
Yes. Most times as a faker, not a collector, to raise the price.

Quote: That may be the case in some instances but would you not agree that the majority of these were created or vet modified by the actual vet?
No. IMO more faker modified than vet modified.

Quote:For me, it is the medallion which is the most important. An original suspension is gravy if you get one.
IMO the suspension, (and the plate, and the ribbon) are a large part of the deal. Approacihng 50%, IMO.

This is one area that I can see both sides of the coin - so to speak. Since I mainly go after my precious KGB and security service badges and stuff, we are talking about 85% Cold War era. All of my WWII and pre-war stuff is mostly for display and historical edification. There are some awards I will probably always have place-holder copies because of prohibitive prices and I'm OK with that. I haven't pursued much of the older stuff with the four-sided suspensions - usually because of price so this has not really been an issue to me before (I have some BMs and CSs with 4-sided suspensions thanks to a great friend, but I probably would never have sought them out at their usual prices. At the same time, I was told by the same friend that one of the suspensions might not be original and I was completely cool with that).

Having said that, if I bought something that was supposed to have a real 4-sided suspension and I paid several hundred dollars for it, I would be fuming mad if any part was not original and this fact not disclosed to me before the purchase (thinking of T1 OGPWs mostly as an example of something I've never wanted to drop that much cash on - but would love to have).

Methinks, that if Sparky the cat likes tuna Cat Chow and Marshall Catov likes Beef Cat Chow, both have a democratic right to like those Cat Chows and one is not right or wrong for liking that Cat Chow. Democracy is great.:thumbsup

Pertaining to this thread, your input is always appreciated and respected Ericanov.:thumbsup:D

Absolutely. To each his own, I say.
