Two more examples; one with the 'large' unit number and the other with the 'small' unit number. The large unit number is for another Guards 'Katyusha' Regiment and the small unit number is for a Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment.

They use the originals in the parade; they have more than enough unit flags to get away with that.

I think you are correct.

Not from "Guards" unit flags, here are a few rare images of Lenin with Stalin from unit flags. The first two are from state security unit flags awarded postwar and the third is from a tank unit during the war that had a 'field made' unit flag given to them by a local Komsomol; the third flag was never in my hands, so sorry for poor quality shot.

Back to Guards unit flags...

For a Guards Army or Guards Corps the actual Guards insignia was embroidered on the unit flag itself. Here is a close up shot of that insignia.
