Trabant anyone?

I've only ever read about these "cars" but this story is kinda funny....how some folk pine for crap from the olden days.
BBC NEWS | Europe | Old Trabants still chugging along
Then again I'd not minding getting back that old '78 Plymouth Volare I once had. Smile It was called affectionately "The Death Mobile".

Honestly, I'd love to have a Trabi! Its made of Duroplast which is light, flexible, and strong. I wouldnt have to worry about crashing so much. But, I hate the drivetrain and powertrain. Maybe id swap them for a Corvette counterpart.Big Grin

About a year or so back I encountered an entire group of people who collect Ladas:

On a related note, if you've got a general's parade uniform and ID books--how about his Zil to fill out your collection?

I was in Budapest last week and I have never seen so many Trabants as they still have there.

Every so often I see one puttering down the streets here in Gdansk but I was surprised by the amount in Hungary.

The Trabbie may have been "crap" but if they were the only car available to buy you would have been pleased to have one. Also they cannot have been that unreliable because the DDR army had a version I believe was called the GT601.
I saw a restored military version in Germany (east) 2 or 3 weeks ago and seriously considered making the mechanic an offer for it.With a 2 stroke engine and millions of parts available must make it easy to keep running.
Finally. I believe the Trabant was being made in kit form and sent to poorer countries up until quite recently.

Cheers
Keith
