Its the standard kgb sword and shield combo used in the piece but they look different enough to me.
It makes sense that a jubilee medal would incorporate images and closely resemble an official piece.
Unless you're getting at something that's just going straight over my head which is always possible.
Are you suggesting the following are not the same design (other than the 1917-1978 font and the "OO")?

I though you were referrering to the item in post #8.
I stand corrected, the 2 you are referring to are indeed the same design.
Apologies for the confusion.

No problem Tommy, it was probably my poor description.
deValcourt Wrote:KGB "commemorative" badges made with these types of pins were generally available anywhere there was any sort of KGB celebration throughout the entire Soviet Union. Produced en masse for the masses - parade goers, those interested in attending whatever functions were going on from games to brief (and highly sanitized) KGB history presentations; perhaps even a KGB produced film might be shown as the sun fell.

In the book (the name has slipped from my mind, but it’s something like “awards of the legal protective organs of state security”... written by two authors) seems to suggest these badge were bestowed or awarded.
Knowing what little I do, it would seem odd for the KGB to simply hand badges out to the masses. It would seem that the words “separate section” or “special department” might generate questions which (I think) would be discouraged rather than encouraged. I have always assumed the recipients would be “connected” and the giving of the badge would be more of a reward than a simple hand out or gift for showing up at a parade… but that’s just me. :D

I am reading a book about SMERSH now (though I'm not at home to give the author's name) and the chapter I am in has all sorts of tables and other info about the OO's since their inception in 1920-22 (as the precursor of the First Chief Directorate of the KGB). I'll get what I can for you as soon as I can - just remind me with a PM and/or email.

Thank you Phillip.
I also recall there being "OO" under the 3rd Chief Directorate (Military Counter-Intel). It is also interesting to note the dates on the "OO" badge (1918-1978).
