KGB and MVD jackets.
#71
Marc, thank you for all of the information - especially about the grey parade-walking out uniforms.

I found this one that the seller swears is MVD (but putting an MVD badge on it doesn't make it so) yet at the same time insists that the piping is red and "not the dark rasberry red worn by retired MVD officers." I'm at best a novice concerning uniforms, but that reasoning seems off to me.

The jacket itself looks authentic to me based on my limited knowledge of colors and at least in the photo, the piping colors look correct too. In fact, I think it's a pretty nice jacket overall.

Anyway, here is the only picture he provided.

I believe it is a Militia (police) general daily uniform; they used red piping and not maroon (MVD).

Works for me Patrick.:)

Here's another one from a different seller who says it is a KGB parade uniform. According to what Marc said above, this could qualify as a parade-walking out unifrom, correct? (Whether or not it is really KGB is a different question).

Once again, the only photo.

That is an infantry captain parade uniform. Not KGB, not parade-walkout. When for sale on eBay, everything turns KGB and/or WW2 :D

A parade-walkout uniform is primarily a gray uniform used by generals and marshals that is fitted with HSU/HSL, ribbon bar and the most prominent badges. I believe that an parade-walkout uniform for an officer would be the parade uniform fitted with ribbons + badges.

You've noticed that too? Speaking of KGB (NKVD) and WW2, this one is supposed to be a GPW border guard uniform. Correct me if my tired eyes are wrong, but the shoulder boards seem to be of different colors (one red piping and the other maybe green).

Edit note: seller says it is an M43 "Gulag Troop gimnasterka" not a border guard tunic.

Red and green? Its a christmas tunic obviously! :D

Perhaps it is just a mis-matched shoulder board?

Phillip,

Difficult to tell what colors are with this picture and the bad lighting.
Anyway, that gymnasterka is regular army issue, doesn't have anything to do with state security departments.

Hey, Commissar, thanks for the welcome!

Actually, I've been here for quite some time, but it was awhile between posts. I had changed my email and couldn't remember my old password, so I re-joined.

The thing that surprised me about Oleg Kalugin was that his highest "standard" award was the Order of the Red Banner. Frankly, in light of his career, I would have thought that he would have received a Lenin. Then again, he apparently rubbed some prominent people the wrong way. He did, however, receive three "Honored Chekist" awards.

The photo of the KGB General with all of the eggs is fascinating. Sometime awhile back I saw a photo of an East German STASI officer who was wearing one of the KGB anniversary awards. So, just as in the west, there was probably a certain amount of "I'll give you one of our awards, you give me one of yours" going on.

From what I read in his autobiography, after the successful completion of some recruiting of KGB agents inthe US, he returned home and Vladimir Kryuchkov, who was either chief of foreign intelligence or was about to be, gave Kalugin the choice of which order he would like to receive - the ORB or the Order of the October Revolution. He didn't say which he took in the book, so thank you for the information. He also received a ORB from Bulgaria, but I can't remember what for.

Yeah, I'm starting to get that. It's like Patrick said, "When for sale on eBay, everything turns KGB and/or WW2." Personally, I'm looking for a pre-war OGPU or Cheka uniform (I'm not that big on NKVD).

Thanks Marc,

Phillip
