Bringing back a major piece of equipment, even in bad shape, was highly regarded during wartime.

I love that story and it would have been a sight to see but I tend to agree with Eric on that one. The US would never have even thought about giving an MoH for that...maybe a silver star but thats about it.

Prior to that, on March 28th, 1944 while operating as part of a recon group, his tank crew destroyed four German gun emplacements and up to 20 German vehicles (with crews). His tank crew's actions allowed the brigade's main force to seize the objective - a city. Zemlyanov also furnished additional intel to his higher HQs upon return to his unit in his battle-damaged tank. Considering that I've seen HSU titles awarded solely for having been a Soviet Olympic medal champion (go figure), I certainly wouldn't quibble with an HSU award to Zemlyanov in this instance. Does anyone have the actual citation to this title?

Destroying 20 vehicles is a different story...If that was the other way around and the German destroyed 20 soviet pieces then they would have certainly been awarded the Knights Cross for that days action.

Gents,
Col V. L. Blinov commanded the NKVD's 241st Separate Escort/Convoy Regiment. As I'm unfamiliar with NKVD unit types, I cannot offer a description of this unit's mission set. Note his NKVD badge on right breast pocket. Regards, slava1stclass |
