Jeffrey Meffert Wrote:I am aware of that. What I am asking is if there were unique titles given to the enlisted medical ranks (as in a "general" is really a "division doctor", a "lieutenant" is really a "military medical assistant"). So do you call a sergeant/starshina in the medical corps something other than sergeant? Just trying to learn more about the ranks. JeffM, Though I could be wrong, I would think the rank would be "Squad Medic". That is somewhat of a guess though, though a logical one. DougD

Gents,
Nice image of naval medical officer (note insignia on boards) Maj Gen A. I. Katkov - a holder of the Order of Nakhimov. Regards, slava1stclass

Looks like he may have both a sevastapol and odessa defense medals on the rack. In that case, I'm sure he earned the Nakhimov.

Komandir RKKA Wrote:Medical service sergant Seems straightforward. I wonder why they didn't want to give their doctors actual officer ranks then. Perhaps it had to do with command issues. It was confusing enough I suppose to have both an officer in command and the unit comissar providing input without having a senior ranking doctor in the mix. Not that it's a problem when the rules are well known. More than once in my career, I the colonel physician, deferred to the line lieutenant or captain to issue the commands.

Exactly. Although medical and other specialty branches like legal can command like units, they aren't considered general "commanders".

There were 7 kinds of staff in RKKA of that period:
commanding, political, technician, administration, medical, veterinary and juridical. All have different ranks for commanders and superiors and the same for enlisted men and sergants.

Great photograph! I bet that he had some serious sea stories to tell.

Gents,
A stunning image of an unidentified Guards Starshina 2nd Class HSU of the Baltic Fleet taken in October 1944. Note, in particular, the ribbon around his cover which reads - "Torpedo Cutters..." Regards, slava1stclass |
