On its way back the motorboat was damaged by shrapnel. The boat quickly flooded with water, but thanks to Private Korneichuk’s resourcefulness and decisive measures the motorboat was saved.
On the shore Private Korneichuk quickly repaired the motorboat and before dawn of December 5 he carried out five trips under enemy machine gun and artillery fire, ferrying 50 soldiers and officers across the river.
In the course of December 5 and 6, 1944, under artillery fire and machine gun fire from enemy aircraft, Private Korneichuk ferried 60 soldiers and officers of the 99th Rifle Division across the river and on his way back put across 20 wounded soldiers and officers.
