Rusty,

That depends greatly on what we would want to accomplish. A project with a tightly focused goal will reduce time the programmer has to dedicate to write the program, thus the cost. On the other end of the spectrum would be a program which does several things that no one is 100% happy with that will need more money to make it live up to everyones expectations.

Assuming we went really basic I would estimate around $400-500. It really depends on how focused our goals are and what features we really need to incorporate. It could go up or down.

What would you expect this project (price) to run?

Thanks!

Further to my original post. If the database contained pictures of higher resolution/size I would donate again.

You mean pictures of the actual award every person has?

That may be too much and a bit unrealistic since not everyone can take pictures due to equipment and the space on the server may become a problem.

This idea is excellent! and I would support it too.

I think too that the idea of a big collection of pictures is unrealistic, it wouldn't be homogeneous (different type of scanners, different resolution,...) and what would be the aim?

But it could be nice to show only some very particular variations...

hmmm. I suppose I was thinking that if someone had serial number xxx and someone else had the same serial number then a photo would be handy. But, If this scenario was to happen, I suppose the communication could then take place between the two parties. So I suppose we don't need pic's. Sorry guys, I'm just thinking out loud.

I think that the Data Base is a good idea, however not sure if it is going to be very effective and successful.
Anyway, I will donate - what if it works?Cool

Looks like we have 14 takers!

That's about $35 per member.

I'd like it to be at $20 per member so it's easier on everyones budgets.

If we get 11 more paying supporters we can ask Art to look into it.

Thanks for everyone's support.

I agree. Moreover, we have Art's main site, with all photos, including PMD's ones...

Guys,

Just to reiterate what I said before:

"If this ever got off the drawing board, I think the main focus should be re-uniting groups. This could be done by keying off of the document number. Ownership really doesn't need to be addressed because if there is a hit which has more than one entry, the number that was entered most recently obviously is the current owner. In any event, all hits would be reported to anyone on the hit list. There would have to be a way of keeping ones identity publicly private, with instructions to post a public message in the forum for all on the hit list to reveal themselves.

The other information that I tried to keep track of in the old database was really pointless. The ultimate goal of the SND can be trimmed away to this:

Enter number, if number is wanted report it, otherwise keep the number on file.

If all energy and work could be concentrated on that specific task, something nice could be done."

If the above was the main purpose it would actually be doing two tasks, keeping an eye out for missing awards, plus storing information on groups. If we added an award date field, it could also keep track of serial numbers and dates awarded ( not that the two are tightly related but if the data is available to you as you're entering the data off the document book, why not use it ) If this is the main goal the battle would be half-over. The other half would consist of the following:

1. Program Access-How does one access the SND. How does the program interface with the forum? a button in the navigation bar?

2. Data Collection-You are presented with a screen to enter data. What data is collected and filed?

3. Data Sorting and Hit Reporting-I enter my data, you enter your data. There is a hit. How does the database report it? to who?

4. Account Management-This is more an administrators thing. Say I no longer want email coming from the SND. how do I get out?

5. Data Management-How should users be able to query the SND? How is the data displayed?

Just some things to chew on Smile
