As this is not a forum that deals with US awards or awards of the post-1945 "American Bloc", I shall stay quiet.

I could say much, having done an undergraduate thesis on the evolution of a US awards "system". (No place ever had a "system", they just made it up and they went along and things changed massively over time, something collectors often wish to ignore.)
