As some will know, this year marks the 70th anniversary of the allied invasion of Normandy, it will also be the final event the Normandy Veterans' Association will participate in before disbanding.
I have planned on attending this years events for a number of years and will be re-exploring Normandy from 29th May to 10th June. I will be based in Vierville-Sur-Mer (close to the Normandy American Cemetery And Memorial) for the duration and will be representing someone who is no longer alive to represent himself, with focus on Omaha Beach (Yes the British were also at Omaha). I will be taking a selection of obscure historical artefacts from the day itself and certainly will be joining in the celebration of a liberated France, whilst also remembering those who aided in the feat. As yet I don't know if that will be on an official level.
The full agenda of the "D-Day Festival" has not yet been set but I'm eagerly awaiting a full selection of activities.
If any other forum members are planning to attend any of the events I'd be happy to meet up and have an enjoyable time.
Also if anyone knows of any "musts" that they'd like to share I'm very open to suggestions. I'll certainly be taking in the full length of the beaches after landing in Ouistreham. I will also be in search for any photographs of a particular vessel that was lost in action.
Even though this will be the final great commemoration of this type I hope that everyone can be impressed by the importance of the occasion.
