Bill Dienna Wrote:2. The photo: it seems to have a white space at the lower right corner. I've never seen this before on an I.D. photo. My thought was that it might have been copied from another I.D. document, in which case the rubber stamp from that document would have been on it. So THAt part of the photo was covered when it was copied for this document, thus leaving the white corner.

Hi Bill,
I am far from being expert and don't know a lot about KGB IDs so I won't express any opinion about authenticity.

I just wanted to tell you about the picture that the white space at lower right corner is very common and doesn't mean anything with finding out if the ID is fake or not. I have seen many real and valid ID photos like this. Even now, in Ukraine, they mostly use this method for ID photos.

My own opinion is that it makes it easier to see that the photo was really stamped (that it was actually there before the stamp was put).

Not all ID photos are like this, but from what I know, only ID photos have such white lower right corner.... At least, you can be sure this was not a picture taken from soviet army archive files that was cropped and glued to your document before being stamped.

Other members can certainly tell you more about other aspects of the ID booklet you posted here.

We've had this discussion before regarding the mysterious white circle corner. For anyone interested:

Thanks, Art, very much.
I have never seen that before, so it's good to learn something!

Fake CheKa/NKVD/KGB Documents - Nota Bene - 10-21-2004

Bill,

I believe we have also discussed similar documents already. It's a fake, and the funniest thing about it that it has KGB CCCP on the cover and KGB of the Counil of Ministers of the CCCP on the inside - names used years apart.

For your viewing pleasure.

Quote:Russian SMERSH ID BADGE For Colonel Antonov Jiergiej Konstantinovich. This is his Badge!! Smersh is Russian for "death to spies". Organized in early 1943 for hunting spies, these men stood behind battle lines and shot anyone who tried to retreat....deterrence. In April 1943 the "Smersh" evolved into the NKGB. This ID is 1 of 2 known to exist at this time, and a Colonel who I understand became a General. Most of this unit destroyed their ID's and changed their names. A rough job to have to shoot your own men!! Unbelievable!!! So when I say rare I am serious! I bought this from a close acquaintance, a very sensitive topic, and it made me quite uneasy.

Sold for 675usd....

Kim,

Thanks for posting it. It is of course a typical fake, similar to a doc we had discussed earlier.

Yes, I guessed it was and should perhaps made it clear :o . But I thought that the price was worth showing. Perhaps the price reflects the fact that the dealer otherwise mostly sell nazi german stuff.

Kim,

I thought you've made it pretty clear by posting it in the fakes section. As for the price, I think it's too high even for a genuine document.

I am truly saddened to think someone actually paid that.

I am not making any claims as to real or fake, but i thought it odd that on this ID his branch insignia is crossed out (on his collar)....real or fake, why?
