My opinion happens to coincide with Marc's. They are not real.

They seem to have come from Ukraine and possibly one seller (Z). I have at least one already filled out - same handwriting - and another pre-stamped blank to "do with as I please," I was told.:( This was several years ago and I keep seeing them pop up from time to time now from various sellers.

These are not a novelty item and a lot of "reputable sellers with perfect FB rating" used to carry them. Some even come with the same photo, but ... different names. :)

That's why I think it was a situation where someone had access to unissued documents and had a number of "useful" stamps laying around.

I've also seen one guy who served as SMERSH, NKVD, MVD and KGB with the same photo and different names.

OH!? Bugger! Well, they did a good job of imitating the ones I've seen in bad photos (except the color is a little more on the pink side on these than they should be, if I remember right).

I've never seen a genuine unissued KGB document.

When I get back, I'll post the only picture I have on hand and it's from the KGB: The Inside Story... book I quoted from in the anniversary badge thread (now sticky:D).

Got to run for a few minutes though.

If the authors are to be believed, this ID belonged to KGB Colonel Oleg Gordievsky - the co-author of KGB: The Inside Story of Its Foreign Operations from Lenin to Gorbachev main author Christopher Andrew. The book is as large as one might expect from such a broad topic and is heavily cited and annotated, so I tend to give it more credence than most on the subject.

Sorry that all of the photos in the book are B&W (and for the strange angle, because of the awkward size of the book), but it's all I have at the moment. It looks as though he removed his own photo from the ID. The question of how he got it out of the country is answered by the fact that he defected from the Soviet Embassy in London in the late 1980s.

The stamps (even the partial below where the photo was) are still visible.

I read somewhere, possibly in this giant book, that the shield emblem in the ID is without the sword because of the attempts in the 1980s to give the KGB a less threatening image.

Obviously, I've never read the book nor do I intend to.

This ID was photoshoped to remove the photo. A couple of years ago it was published it in the Russian press with the photo. Not that I care, but wasn't he smuggled out of the country. That would explain the ID.

In my previous post I was talking about an unissued document, have never seen one before.
