I would higky recommend three Russian movies:
"Star", "General", "August of 1944".
All of them are made in 1990s and good quality. They are available on DVD with English subtitles.

Well, I finally watched 'Great Tank Battles Of World War II - Death In Sand And Snow / Out Blitzing The Blitzkrieg' and it's a very good DVD available at around £8 over here in the UK.

I'm currently watching another series I came across, 'Russia The Forgotten Years" which comes on three VHS videos. I paid £4 each for them, which can't be bad! The documentary has some nice shots of various medals, goes into the generals and marshals that fought on the Russian side, has old footage of Stalin and Hitler instructing the various military leaders on what to do etc. It's quite an interesting set if anyone care's to get it. It's nice to finally see some of this coming on the UK market.

Kind Regards,
Shane Cook.

I finished watching 'Russia - The Forgotten Years' video set. It's quite an interesting set, and you get to see lots of generals wearing various soviet awards. It tells the story of the Eastern Front, in quite good detail. There was also some fottage of Stalin presenting the 'Order of Victory' medals at the end of the war.

Quite an interesting series, and great for the £4 I paid for each tape, £12 (around $18) in total. Anyone who wants the set can order it from here (PAL only):

Seems like an exellent buy.

I am currently looking for a set of docummentaries called "Velikaya Otechestvennaya" / "Great Patriotic"

This series ran on Russian TV when I was 15 year old (bout 15 years ago). Was black and white and covered all aspects and sides of 1941-1945 war. I think it had 10 or so parts and all in Russian

If anyone know where I can buy a set, please let me know

In the same spirit, I can recommand a DVD I recently bought in London : "Berlin surrender".

With an english commentary, this documentary tells the story of the battle for Berlin. It features footage filmed by soviet camera crews located alongside combat troops.

60 mn.

Edited by Delta plc.

Enjoy !!

Has anyone seen the mid-70's Soviet cinema production, "...a Zori Zdyes Tikhie" ("...and the Dawns are Quiet Here)? It is the very moving story of a group of Soviet women anti-aircraft gunners, led by a crusty old senior sergeant, who set off in search of a group of fascist parachutists who have landed in their area of operations. It is worth searching out. Ditto for "Ballad Soldata" ("Ballad of a Soldier").

This one is easy to find and to buy in DVD... on the web.

"Ballad Of a Soldier" is a 1959 Russian picture. 88 minutes.

The film revolves around Alyosha Skvortsov (Zhanna Prokhorenko), a Russian soldier, who, as the film begins, has just taken out two German tanks by himself. Offered a medal for his actions, he instead requests a leave-of-absence so that he can visit his mother. The majority of the rest of the film follows him on his journey across the countryside, meeting new people and through various means, helping them improve their lives.

Video version (not DVD)

Also quite easy to find and buy in a dedicated russian video/DVD website.

Film based on Boris Vasilyev’s story of the same name.(1972). 181mn

Screenplay: B. Vasilyev, S. Rostotsky. Director: S. Rostotsky.
Starring: A. Martinov, I. Dolganova, O. Ostroumova, Å. ******a et al.

A group of young girls, anti-craft gunners, has to start unequial fighting against the enemy-paratroopers in the front-line area. These girls used to dream of great love, tenderness and family comfort but a severe war fell to their lot and they fulfilled their soldier’s duty completely…

Prizes of IFF (International Film Festival) in Venice (1972) and AUFF (All-Union Film Festival) in Alma-Ata (1973)

The image represents the cover chosen for the videotape, not the original movie picture itself.

Just arrived in France, and available in all good book/disc-stores :

"Stalin : from Revolution to Superpower" (Von des Revolution zur Supermacht").
4 parts :
* The Revolution
* Village and Factory
* The Great Terror
* The Soviet Superpower

Film by Harmut Kaminski, who has been the first Western film-maker to gain permission to work in the Central State Archive Krasnogorsk, and in Minsk and Vilnius. Film made in 1993.
2 DVDs, more than 200mn. In English, German and French.

Not had time to see all of both DVDs but seems great (many original documents)
