Help to ID Soviet Shoulderboard - Prometheus - 02-03-2007 Thanks again guys :). Help to ID Soviet Shoulderboard - Sergei - 02-04-2007 Willie, of course you are right. I was guessing that the middle letter could have been misread and when the word in question is accompanied by something like 16cm it may well have been just the dimension of the item. The word RAEMER does not sound very Russian but I may be wrong. Sergei Help to ID Soviet Shoulderboard - Prometheus - 02-04-2007 Sergei, you are right, it does mean "size"........I put the english word "size" in the translation box and it comes up with РАЭМЕР......but it doesn't translate РАЭМЕР to english, go figure? BTW, I use this translation site: Im Translator : Free Translation Service Help to ID Soviet Shoulderboard - Synthesis - 02-04-2007 Prometheus Wrote:mine has a green rubberized backing to it. with the word "РАЭМЕР 16CM" in a box, on one of the boards. 16CM is the length of it, that I gather by using a ruler. but I don't know what РАЭМЕР means, I tried using one of those on-line translators and it didn't translate it. Ah, no kidding--the same as mine (I also have normal KGB boards with the same green rubber--a nice change from the starched cloth-board stuff, I guess). Help to ID Soviet Shoulderboard - Lapa - 02-04-2007 Prometheus, That is because you used the letter "Э" instead of the letter "З". They look somewhat similar, but in fact are quite different. Try doing the following thing, using your online translator: type in "size" and translate to Russian; then copy the result, and translate it back to English. I believe that, magically, you are going to get the word "size". Marc Help to ID Soviet Shoulderboard - willie777 - 02-04-2007 Heres a little lesson in russian: Э=E З=Z Help to ID Soviet Shoulderboard - Sergei - 02-04-2007 Prometheus, They've used a rather unfortunate Rusian font in that translator, here is the difference between the two letters in the words that sound similar in both languages. Everest - Эверест Zoology - Зоология On your boards, I am now more or less convinced they meant Size 16cm. The letter "Э" is more like "Eh", while the Russian letter "E" is similar to the English one. In Russian, there are different "E"s :D Marc Help to ID Soviet Shoulderboard - willie777 - 02-04-2007 So: E is long e Э is short e Correct? Help to ID Soviet Shoulderboard - Lapa - 02-04-2007 Not exactly, the difference is in the way it sounds; E is more like "yeah" and Э like e in "great". Marc |
