Badge "For Extended Service". - EricFG - 06-02-2011 Well, folks......after a looooong time searching for an Air Force & Navy badge in the older style I finally hit pay-dirt. To those who say 'Ya can't find nothin' good on the ebay' I say you are a putz. ;) So for your viewing pleasure here are all three early versions. :thumbsup Note the different paint colors on the wings; I've seen this variation before. Also, in the second image I've flipped up the numbered pendant on the bottom badge; if ya squint really hard you can see how relatively thick the pendant is. Sometimes pendants can be thinner. I've also noticed three different shapes of the pendants; diamond and heart-shaped on para jump badges and the roughly triangular pendants seen here. Badge "For Extended Service". - medals73 - 06-02-2011 Nice! Sadly the badge (naval) has gone astray from a submariner whose group lives with me. (Also many pictures and documents on his father and his mother's medal.) Badge "For Extended Service". - EricFG - 06-02-2011 Nice photo. Navy photos are rarer than the army ones, and that particular badge is rarely seen in wear. Badge "For Extended Service". - medals73 - 06-02-2011 Thanks. With many photos (and even more documents, but few medals :( ) from the family (dad, mon, and son [him]) that is the only one that shows this badge. Do you know if there were some kind of 'ersatz' badge for the long service medals?I think these bridge the gap between enlistment and the initial awarding of the 10 years long service medal. I'd surmise that these were only issued with pendants numbered 1 through 9, and that after 9 years you'd get the Long Servise Medal. But, perusing one of Boev's badges books I see a "10" and an "11" numbered pendant. Maybe the soldier wanted everyone to know just exactly how long he'd survived in the armed forces? Badge "For Extended Service". - medals73 - 06-02-2011 Well . . . interestingly (?) the guy I displayed above also got the following. Badge "For Extended Service". - Lapa - 06-03-2011 Or maybe, it may not be directly related to those long-service medals... Effectively, it is for people who decided to serve beyond the mandatory military service period (СВЕРХСРОЧНАЯ СЛУЖБА). Those folks weren't eligible for a LSM (after 10 years or more)? Badge "For Extended Service". - EricFG - 09-01-2011 EricFG Wrote:Here's another one. An enamel version with the standard pin attachment. After never having seen another badge without the loops I saw two today on eBay. Both looked kosher (considering the seller's images) and both were the older, brass and enamel variety. Badge "For Extended Service". - EricFG - 09-01-2011 Koslova Wrote:Thank you. Do you know if they were some kind of 'ersatz' badge for the long service medals? No, I don't think so. They were both created around the same time, 1957, I think and probably for slightly different criteria with regards to time of service. |
