Incomplete secondary school (неполная средняя школа) in those days ran up to grade 7. I think the minimum education required was 4 years. By the way, неполная should be in one word, this shows how badly educated people were.
Полевая почта 2787 (Field Post Office, I guess) was actualy a mailing address for a unit (which was obviously on the move during war time).

I picked up a pair of documents for Victory over Germany and the Liberation of Prague medals for a private in the 21st Guards Tank Brigade.

Could anyone please tell me what the regimental abbreviation stands for as it is the longest I have come across.

Thanks,

Simon

I cheated on this one a bit in that I didn't fully read it, but instead looked up the 21st Guards Tank Brigade in an OOB to see what was in it. Since this is also the 21st Guards "something", it looks like this was probably the 21st Guards Motorized Rifle Battalion. I know it seems to say "regiment" on the doc, but that brigade appears to have consisted of two subordinate tank battalions and the named MRB. I'll keep looking though.

Edit to add info:

According to my OOB reference, the 21st Guards Tank Brigade had the following title: "Zhitomir, Vienna, twice awarded Order of the Red Banner, Orders of Suvorov, Kutuzov".

Another edit a while after the last one:

Another close look at the posted image, and it's becoming clearer. In cyrillic, I think I'm seeing the letters that actually create what I wrote above in that long-ass honorific title:

Upper image: Commander of "21 Гв МЖВДКОСК полка"
Lower image: Commander of "21 Гв М. Ж. В. д К. о С К полка"

In short, "Commander of the 21st Gds Motorized Zhitomir, Vienna, twice awarded Order of the Red Banner, Orders of Suvorov, Kutuzov Regiment [battalion]"

Other than the "regiment" note where I think it should be "battalion", it all seems to match up to the long title from the OOB.

Russian abbreviations are nothing but art!

Thanks very much Brian,

Very impressive. Which OOB do you use? I couldn't find this unit in any that I have.

I used a combination of two sources: Poirier's "Red Army Order of Battle" and Sharp's "Soviet Order of Battle WWII - Volume III (Soviet Mechanized Corps and Guards Armored Units)" (page 70, which leads you to page 43). Poirer gave me the big honorific clue (page 100).

Doing some work on a Red Army Book and came across this on the top of the "service page" - seems to read as Заполнена сослав which literally translates (i.e. Babelfish etc) as "filled after exiling". Is this a true translation?

There are a couple of other words on the same page I am unsure of:

  1. 70th Independent Battalion ? NKO
  2. 18th Army, 383 ? Rifle division, 594th Rifle Regiment

On the name page what is #4 - ? point Lvov OVK.
