And some additional notes to motivate collectors to pay their attention to these items.
There were up to 10 different producers of only 1st class of these orders. Besides official Moscow and Leningrad mints they called 'Temporary mints'. So there are different variations of the items connected with reverses, methods of writing serial numbers and shade of enamel. We know now partly ranges of serial numbers for definite producer but some producers are still unknown! You can see that some ranges are comparatively small. So these variations of OPW 1985 issues might be more value than other ones.
For example, for OPW 1st class:
Unknown producer, s/n range 1137761-11338028, depeening around screwpost, s/n made by drill.
Tallinn jewellery plant, s/n range 1695901-1826900, depeening around screwpost, s/n made by graver with like-printing figures.
Bronnicy jewellery plant, 2283901-2458900, light deepening around screwpost, s/n made by graver, weak gold plating.

Yes, USSR silver awards are Sterling. And you can bet that more are being melted over the past couple of years as silver prices have more than doubled and interest in the awards has waned. :(

It's silver, solid one 925.

I have posted it before, but can't recall where it is

Here is nice classification of OGPW 85 only one at the moment

And it's very rare, but from time to time you can see catch -up issued by 85s.

I have small group, the guy was one of those who been awarded by 85 catch up, in 1990 by the award order from 1944. Unfortunately award itself is missing.

Melting down? I have seen how fakers do more 'creative' stuff. they call it 'transaction period awards'

Hi guys,

Here are two GPWs I have that are very close to each other in number, but they seem to be of different manufacturer and engraved differently. I've perused the Mondvor site, but wasn't able to attribute them too well. According to MondVor they are both KMD, but I am not sure... Can anyone lend a hand? Thanks!

George

The Soviet Screwback has a good classification system which is a little more user "friendly" instead of switching back and forth through pages on the Mondvor web site. They show pictures of each variety and type as well as characteristics of each. From your pictures, I would say they both look like the starback variations with one "ray" under the handle of the sword and manufactured at the KMD facility.

Thanks, Sanzotta! :thumbsup yeah, it would make sense that they are both KMD given the curved mintmark--but it seems like the shape is slightly different? I think I need to have photos taken from the exact same angle to be sure.

That’s right. Range 200 001 - 250 500 were made at the KMD. They can have 3 different variants of obverses, many reverses (flat, star or middle bended) and 2 mintmarks (curved down or straight).

Hi guys,

I was wondering if you can help with the serial number for my LMD, "baby" GPW-2. The serial was done kind of sloppy by the engraver and I am not 100% if it's 580,662 or 580,562.

Thanks for your help!

George

I vote 580,662
