I assume excessive polishing by the vet.

I recall seeing those glories in Dave´s collection. He stated that the vet polished them every single day. Maybe it was a differnt man, but the group was as worn as this one.

And I thought my OG III was worn because the clock didn´t show...

Yeap, these used to be Dave's. I am still kicking myself for not buying them when I could. :banghead

Sergei Nikolayevich Shishov.

Hi!

I have a pretty pile of awards that are in good condition, but need some cleaning before they can be displayed properly. The bunch of awards are made from different materials (brass, nickel, silver, gold, etc.). Is there something I can rub the medals with to make them shine again without worrying about damage to the enamel and medal in general?

I'd recommend nothing harsher than dish soap and warm water and then a good drying/buffing with a soft cloth.
I use Q-tips, aka ear swabs for delicate work.

Removing surface crud is what you want to happen. Removing 50 years of patina is a result you do NOT want. IMO.

There's a discussion here about cleaning: http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/soviet-military-awards/soviet-bloc-awards/mongolia/6322-its-official-now-im-totally-hooked-4.html Starts on page 4 if the link doesn't take you there directly.

yep, most of the times you end up regretting the cleaning! But sometimes the awards are so dirty that I do too some little little cleaning (i.e. they are totally black - happened recently with a RS). For silver I recommend a q-tip and sodium bicarbonate (baking powder) very very gently, until you are satisfied of the cleaning.
