Nota Bene Wrote:Christophe,

Thanks, buddy!

Guys,

You know that I am always willing to help to the best of my ability, but like I said I am not Paul. Dixie!

Let's wait and see what Paul has to say, I am sure he is busy settling down after coming back and some R&R probably wouldn't hurt him either, but I am sure he will be getting back to us.

Alexei

Alexei,

I don't see a reason how being a dealer would prevent you from providing authentication service.

In the field of German awards there are several dealers who issue certificates. The most reputable of them - Detlev Neiman - happens to be one of the most popular dealers...

As long as you are honest in what you are doing...

I have October 1998 catalogue from a well-known NJ dealer often mentioned on the forum. In the catalogue, it is stated that authentication service for Soviet orders, medals, badges is available for $45. The catalogue is old. Therefore, it is likely that the service is no longer available or the price of certification increased. Did anyone have his items authenticated by this dealer? Though he is well known in the collector community, I have never seen a reference to his COA.

Cheers,

Simon

The problem of having a dealer authenticate an order is he is not impartial.

Thanks for reply, Ron. Your point is valid. I brought up this authentication service because other forum members mentioned that in German militaria collecting it is common for a dealer to issue COA.

Cheers,

Simon

I think any authentication certificate should be taken at face value.

Do you believe Ebay sellers Guarantee's of Authenticity?. I also remember seeing a thread talking about our Eastern collectors having no respect for Paul's COA's (This is not my view by the way..I think Paul does a fantastic job)

I think Alexei is right not to offer an Authentication service, even though he is an honest trustworthy dealer. It would not seem ethical to authenticate his own items.

Sigh...not that it really effects me anymore..all of my items are destined for new owners...

I diagree!

The point of a Certificate of Auhenticity is the security a buyer feels and a "good faith" promise the authenticator gives when transacting a piece. The "good faith" promise can be backed by a financial restitution guarantee or a fairly simple disclaimer similar to PMD's.

A dealer should absolutely offer authentications for his merchandise, otherwise why shop with him/her? Additionally, since these dealers acquire their merchandise from presumably trustworthy sources they should back their pieces up with a guarantee (which they currently do). Now, for the non-dealer inventory, the dealers having acquired the necessary knowledge when purchasing pieces for resale could conceivably be impartial to pieces seeking certification. Should a particular piece interest a dealer, a fair market offer would be made and if agreed by the current powner, the piece would be acquired by the dealer.

I fail to see where the members here make the connection between saying Alexei is an honest and trustworthy dealer AND we cannot have him authenticate awards (uhmmm ... because he is honest and trustworthy?!:confusedSmile

I can see how some can argue this "devil's advocate" side, but I prefer the "other" side - the real one ... Unfortunately, the reality is that these arguments are moot points since Alexei is not really interested in providing the authentication service.

And I disagree with you because it is a conflict to have a dealer authenticate his own peices for sale. You need a third a party.
I once had a dealer who had an order that I wanted, but I wanted it sent to Paul, he refused to do so, and is a well known dealer. His opinon was different from Pauls and he knew it was going to come back as fake.

As for Alexei, he is well respected and if I buy from him. I already know he is not going to sell me anything that is a fake. And if he has doubts he sends it to Paul.

Ron,

Yolkins line of thought does make sense!

Let's say you bought a Kutuzov 3 from Alexei. By selling this piece he gives you a guarantee that the piece he sold is authentic and if you don't agree you can return it for a full refund! Why not put that on paper?
The guarantee is already there, so how can it be a conflict?

He guarantees the product he sold and backs it up with his certificate!

I don't think he should authenticae other peoples awards but he can if he wants do his own.

As fars as the dealer you are speaking about, If it's the "other "major" NY dealer" then I only wish you can read Russian! He got his butt handed to him on a major Russian forum! He tried advertising his auction catalog and majority of his high-end stuff was proclaimed to be fake!!!

I suggest not dealing with this person! He has burned one too many people and his name & reputation to many collectors is $#!#

Rusty.
