No. Anything is possible, but I don't think it's too probable.

More likely the suspension was added by the seller.

Found this one in my collection.

That was a lot of trouble to go to by a dealer. Why even bother when they could just try to sell it as a broken piece rather than confuse or annoy collectors? Too bad he didn't just leave it alone rather than add that ring if that's the case.

Of similar oddities, I found a couple weeks ago a T2V1 CSM in the 800k range with a homemade and crudely made square suspension w/red ribbon. Where it came from, it was only about one step from the original family (I bought it directly from a guy who canvases door-to-door around Kokand in the Ferghana Valley). That means it was very likely not a suspension meant to fool a collector, but probably one made many, many years ago by the original owner to match suspensions on earlier T1 awards he probably held (that's my theory anyway). It was a medal that had never been held by a dealer in the sense we know on the web, and probably came from a village that even today may not have running tap water.

A couple weeks ago in another instance, I posted images of a numbered CSM on which someone had done hand-engraving on the reverse side in a floral pattern. It was folk art, done to please the owner, not to deceive in any way. It was another oddity, but a very real one (and it looks very cool Wink ).

I picked up BM several months ago that had the "ear" missing, so the veteran had drilled a hole through the top in order to hang it. The hold is nearly large enough for a pencil to pass through, but that's what the old guy did. Who knows why he made such a large hole (maybe the only drill bit he had?), the hole speaks for itself. The medal itself is something of a disabled veteran, broken but still honorable.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you are far enough upstream in the tributaries, sometimes this weird stuff is actually done by the veteran for reasons we'll never fully know and not by some faker in Kiev or Moscow or the Baltics. Everyone here has encountered so many fakes and deceptions in the big cities and markets and online that there is a near-complete lack of faith and trust outside this forum (and usually justifiably so).

As for following uniform regs, we all know that those old Soviet veterans, once out of uniform, often didn't follow the rules all that precisely. We've all see awards being worn by actual veterans in the incorrect order or with the wrong ribbons or the ribbons wrapped in reverse. Crime of all crimes for collectors, those old guys even SHINED their medals as if they were proud of them! Think of all those yards and yards of lost and ancient patina, all rubbed out in the name of something so simple as pride and vanity. Wink I bet a few of them would even have replaced their "salty" old ribbons has they been able to afford it or find a source, even though they might have committed the sin of having a clean and sharp-looking ribbon.

Pardon my humor... Big Grin

I think this ORS was jacked around for one of three reasons:

1. the veteran ended up in a (communist? 5-sided suspensions?) country where award regs said he needed to suspend them all. I do know that ORS ribbon stock is actually obtainably in lengths appropriate for the 5-sided suspension.

2. the veteran simply preferred to hang all his awards in the same manner once he was out of the military and on his own.

3. the veteran really didn't want to punch screwpost holes in his one good suit when he went out for the 9th of May each year. The elderly on post-Soviet pensions are often dirt poor with not a lot of clothing. I've seen several veterans, male and female, selling cigarettes or begging on the street. Life is really tough for some of these guys in their twilight years. Often all they have left at that point are the lesser jubilee awards, having sometimes even sold the better ones for bread money. I am a bit cynical about it, but I've seen the begging as recently as two weeks ago in Uzbekistan. Sad

Let the flaming begin... Wink

Alexei - that ORS you posted is exactly the stuff I'm talking about. I'd guess some dude just wanted to hang it with the rest of his stuff. I bet the ORS looks great from a suspension, even if out of regs. Big Grin

I've seen them sewn on to the uniform through the hole.

Nice post Brian! :thumbsup I'm now willing to believe.Smile
I'd also like to see that BM with the huge hole in it, and CSM with the homemade suspension.
Alexei, I like that RS with the crossways hole. And they sew them on their suits like that? I'd do the bottom two star rays as well just to be safe. I know I'd be very sadCryif I lost my RS. Do you have any more oddities you'd like to share when you have time? I'd love to see them. Smile

I'll see what I can dig up and photograph in the next couple weeks. Maybe we can start a string of posts for oddities and homemade variations made of real stuff by real veterans. I think it'd be cool.

I don't really have much. The king of oddities is Dave. He has/had some amazing modified awards.

I think this new scan should lay the matter to rest.
