Patriotic War. - JensF. - 07-01-2003 What happened to the screw of the left one? Is it repaired? Patriotic War. - AlexF. - 07-01-2003 The left one has a tin soldering over the silver one, please see the scratches below... After running this amongs some collectors, I tend to think that these orders came out as a fix for engraving or other errors, tin soldering was also done at the mint. 1. The job with polished rectangle is very accurate, it's height is 4.5mm on both, meaning, same tool was used. 2. Style of engraving serial numbers is w/o doubt the usual "sure" one. And so on... Patriotic War. - derspinna - 07-18-2003 was the 85 reissue of this award made of silver like the previous issues or some base metal silver plated. thanks for any help. Patriotic War. - HuliganRS - 07-18-2003 It was made from Silver. Rusty. Patriotic War. - sovvisor - 07-18-2003 The hammer and sicle in the centre is also made of silver nut gilded with goldplating that makes the difference between the 85´s and the forties edition were the hammer and sicle are pure gold on top of the enamel. Best Patriotic War. - HuliganRS - 07-19-2003 Actually, it's not pure gold. It's a very heavy mix, that's why there are different shades. Patriotic War. - Alex Coletti - 07-21-2003 Rusty, What do you mean by "heavy mix" ? Alex Patriotic War. - HuliganRS - 07-21-2003 There's more Copper and other things than gold in the H&S. 24K Gold is about 99% pure gold. the lower the number - less gold is in it. I'm not sure but I believe the H&S has less than 10K. Hope this helps, Rusty. Patriotic War. - Alex Coletti - 07-22-2003 Rusty, Had no idea that the gold in these orders is of such low quality. This would explain the reddish color in some gold components. The red-orange color is probably caused by a significant concentration of copper in the gold. One source (ABEPC) states that: OGPW II Class has 0,325 +/- 0,002 grams “pure” gold content. So I have always assumed that meant the gold was close to 24K. Thanks for the info Alex Patriotic War. - HuliganRS - 07-22-2003 The reason you see the color differences in H&S is oxidation of copper. 24K gold doesn't really oxydise. Rusty. |
