Films/Documentries on WW2 - scook17 - 07-15-2002 I've been watching an interesting series of documentaries recently, called "The Colour of War", which follows WW2 using colour film taken at that time. It's quite similar to the well know 'The World at War' series, and just as interesting. The problem with most of these series are that they are written from a western perspective, and concentrate on the allied version of the war. Are there any similar series, written largely about the Russian version of WW2? I recently watched 'Enemy at the Gates', which was quite an interesting film about the siege of Stalingrad. Are there any other films of this type, dealing with the Russian perspective on the war? Kind Regards, Shane Cook. Films/Documentries on WW2 - Tal Inbar - 07-15-2002 E X C E L L E N T series, made by Richard Overy. 10 half hour programs. There is also a book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! The New York Times Book Review, Chris Patsilelis : "Making excellent use of newly available Presidential archival material and K.G.B. film collections, Overy ... attributes the Soviet victory to the tough Russian spirit, which was hewn by the bitter climate, cruelllly harsh working conditions and Stalin's heinous purges and farm collectivization programs.... [a] penetrating and compassionate book... " Films/Documentries on WW2 - Tal Inbar - 07-15-2002 : Films/Documentries on WW2 - new world - 07-15-2002 Shane, There are few movies that are not exactly about the war, but they are still quite interesting films about Stalin's era and you may enjoy them as well. They all have been either made in the West or translated into English. 1) "The Inner Circle" - was filmed in Hollywood (in the beginning of 90s), but the director - Konchalovskiy - is Russian. 2) "East-West" - joint Russian-French production, filmed in the end of 90s. Major modern Russian and French stars are in this film: Bodrov, Menshikov, Katherin Denev. 3) "Burnt by the Sun" - Nikita Mikhalkov's production, won Oscar as the best foreign film (in 1994 I think). Best regards, New World Films/Documentries on WW2 - scook17 - 07-15-2002 Well, I did a search on Amazon UK and found the following. Has anyone seen any of these? VHS (PAL) 1. Films/Documentries on WW2 - Kjetil Kvist - 07-15-2002 One of the best war movies I have ever seen is Elem Klimovs "Come and see" (Idi i smotri) from 1985. Tells the story of a young boy who becomes a partisan. I have only seen it once - in 1989 - but it has stuck with me. Far better than "Enemy at the gates" (was dissapointed there). You should be able to find it on vhs and dvd. Films/Documentries on WW2 - Art - 07-16-2002 Kjetil, Is this the film about that young boy and his slow descent into madness at losing his Mother to the Nazis? Black and White movie correct? Some really good parts of that movie include the part where they are going through the swamp at night..wow! of course I won't ruin it by telling any more very good movie though! In my opinion, "The Inner Circle" is an excellent movie. Don't worry and think it has been overly "Hollywood-ized" It was definitely told from the Soviet point of view. We talked about other movies some time ago..just search for "Inner Circle". Christian Zulus mentions a movie called "Burnt by the Sun", never seen that though. Art Films/Documentries on WW2 - CZ - 07-22-2002 Shane, you will find the above from Art mentioned movies (infos, photographs and VHS-Covers) under this thread: http://soviet-awards.addr.com/forum/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=75 Best regards Christian Zulus Films/Documentries on WW2 - scook17 - 02-18-2003 Well, I've had 'Blood Upon the Snow' on order with Amazon for three months now and they have eventually told me they can't get it any more and suggested somewhere else I order it from. We'll see how long that takes. I did, however, manage to get a DVD recently entitled 'Great Tank Battles Of World War II - Dawn Of The Titans / Superior Force' which came by mistake instead of the DVD I ordered, 'Great Tank Battles Of World War II - Death In Sand And Snow / Out Blitzing The Blitzkrieg'. Anyway I really liked the first, and it had a reasonable amount of stuff the German/Soviet campaign, right up until the turning point at Moscow. I never knew for instance that the Russians lost over 3,000 tanks and armoured vehicles in Smolensk, just outside of Moscow, so it proved quite interesting. I also noticed the same publisher produced 'The Great Tank Battle Of Kursk' on DVD. I'll probably order both and see what they are like when they arrive. Kind Regards, Shane Cook.
