Railway Security Dog Handler Badge.
I don't ever remember seeing one of these, so I picked it up. This one was supposedly first issued in the late 80's.

Re: Railroad Security Dog Handler Badge
That's the first one of any type I've seen with a green background. I knew they had to exist, but never saw one before - much less with the dog and railway symbol.:thumbsup It looks generally Soviet borderguard. Is this correct?

Re: Railroad Security Dog Handler Badge
The green would seem to indicate border service. The seller only said it was related to railroad security as indicated by the winged wheel above.

Re: Railroad Security Dog Handler Badge
Also the hammer and wrench at the bottom, right?
All of the badges I've seen with dog and handler have been border guard, and in Russia itself, the same was true with airport and railway security (border guard also). The only time I saw MVD troops with dogs were at instillations that still had fences and perimeter guards. But, as I've been reminded, that was a long time ago.

Re: Railroad Security Dog Handler Badge
Has anyone ever seen any more of these floating about? I would very much like one.

Re: Railroad Security Dog Handler Badge
A further question would be - Is this a Soviet item?

Everyone knows, no matter where an award is from, that if it is Railway related I'm after it. Had some surprisingly good luck too.
No doubt this Badge has other classes than just "1". I don't know if this Badge is related to the Ministry Of Lines Of Communication (USSR)/Ministry Of Railways (RF) or Ministry Of Internal Affairs (USSR/RF) but the Russian Federation's Ministry Of Internal Affairs has officially issued a "Canine Unit" Commemorative Medal and it would seem that the dogs are "bred for service" if The Committee On Public Medals And Chest Badges Of The Russian Federation Medal is anything to go by. Medal "100 Years Of Canine Units Of The Ministry Of Internal Affairs Of Russia". Medal "100 Years Of The Dog Breeding Service Of Russia". Deputy Dog can find himself featured on many a border guard award. Here are two of my favourites. Seek 'Em Rex! How's Wolfie? Really takes me back to the days of "Red Alert".

Re: Railroad Security Dog Handler Badge
I would think this to be an RF item, rather than Soviet, simply because there is no "gerb" (or State seal) featured. Virtually all MVD qualification badges bore this official mark and, of course, the military qual badges featured the red star with hammer and sickle.

If I were to have an educated guess at the time period of this I would go for 1998-2003. It is extremely unlikely it is from after 2003 as on 18th September 2003 Russian Railways was separated from the Ministry Of Transport with a very different logo to the winged wheel. Since it is now also a "public company" and not part of a ministry it is responsible for its own security and dog handling too.
I don't think "The Freak" will have been awarded one.... Even though his portrait is on the wall.
