Can anyone give me more information about this ushanka? I can´t find this type of hat in the army, navy, airforce reference book 1989. Best regards J |

Re: Admiral Ushanka
Seems to be non-regulation item unless it's pre-1958 (which I doubt).
However, according to the regulations, officers and generals in the Soviet Army were allowed to purchese astrakhan lamb fur ushanki. I would guess this can be something of this type. After all, material is rather expensive anyway. |

Re: Admiral Ushanka
Thanks Al-muell
Interesting. "officers and generals in the Soviet Army were allowed to purchese astrakhan", but could they buy a ushanka and use the admiral cockade (from the admiral winter or parade cap) on it as they want? If this is not a regulare cap - wich admiral want to usa a "home made" cap? Was it common to do so? :) Thanks! |

Re: Admiral Ushanka
According to the regulation private buy astrakhan lamb fur ushankas were to be worn in place of regular ushanki (with the badge), so I see no problem for that in the navy. However, those army ones were usually felt-topped, not astrakhan l. f.- topped. But it may mean nothing.

Re: Admiral Ushanka
Ok!
I mean, the admiral winter cap: http://www.undertheredstar.com/Navy/NavAdmfur.jpg is one of the most beautiful caps ever made - why would a admiral in the navy replace that cap (also astrakhan wool) with something "cheaper", like a traditional ushanka made of astrakhan wool? I could understand it if a officer replace his traditionally navy ushanka with a more expensive astrakhan wool ushanka. |

Re: Admiral Ushanka
Nicier doesn't always mean "more practical". As is the case with army Papakhas, admiral caps don't offer protection to ears, neck and face. Ushanka does.

Ok, I can believe that! So, is this type of caps/ushankas common on the market? I have not seen a cap like this before. Nice if it is accapted as a cap and not a fake.

Re: Admiral Ushanka
A friend of mine got one really cheap with officer's badge, but that's the only other one I have seen. Those used in the Army are more common, but on the other hand in the army they were also usd by the Kremlin guards and as general's field winter headwear (with winter jacket , padded trousers and adjustable boots), so Your cap is a rare occurence.
