What would this have come off of?

Not knowing where to exactly start this thread, I figured this would be a good place.

Got this with another badge that I won on my local auction site.

What would it have come off of?

Looks like it came off of an outdoor structure, perhaps the side of a building, bridge, or memorial.

The Germans used to put eagles on their train box cars. Maybe this was for use on the outside of a box car. I think Art is right that it was used outside for some ID purpose. Clete

The information that was supplied with the auction (I was bidding on the Guard's badge) was that they were both dug up on the Russian position on the Oder.

don't know, those seem way bigger than mine. It is roughly the size of a Guards badge.
