Pilot's Badge

I normally collect WW2 German Air Force militaria, and was wondering if the Soviet Air Force awarded pilot badges to their pilots. I have the book Stalin's Eagles which shows many a pilot in full uniform, but none seem to be wearing a discernible pilot's badge. Was such a badge issued? Can someone post a pic or provide a website where they're shown? Thanx to all!

Gene,

Take a look at the posts I made some time ago, Air Force Insignia..2 scans from the book "Soviet Aerospace Handbook".

I'm not aware of any other insignia, although insignia and uniforms are not my strong point. I know the typical WWII Soviet Pilot had awards he was issued ( if any ) on his flight uniform and that was about it.

Art,

Thanx, but those are postwar wings. I'm trying to find out if they had a WW2 equivalent; the Soviets were big on all kinds of awards so it would make sense to honor those that flew for the Motherland.

Gene,

I'm not aware of any WWII decoration of the "wings" type. I know decorations were worn on the uniform, but I don't think there was any standard device like the Luftwaffe ( flying eagle carrying swastika) had. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I think it is safe to confirm what Art is saying. I have never seen any WWII Soviet "wings".

On Pilot Wings

I agree that it was no "Pilot Wings" per se, but most of the pilots graduated from an Airforce academy and wore badges similar to the one shown below (c. 1939). I have a few of them from different academies.

I hope this helps

Hi Dmitry,

That's what I'm looking for. If you know of any for sale, I'd be interested. Do you have any wartime pics of this badge being worn? In "Stalin's Eagles" there is a studio photo of a pilot wearing this badge, but I have yet to find another. Spasiba!

I know of at least 9 variations of official Soviet WWII wings - sewn on arm insignia. They are all very rare. Please see a photo of a Soviet Airforce Colonel.

Due to copyright issues I will not post the picture here, but you can see great picture of the above insignia here:
