Badge "100 Years Of The Bolshoj Theatre".
I am at a total loss to explain what 100-year anniversary they might have been celebrating in the Soviet theater in 1925. Can anyone help me with this one? I can't find this one in a catalog, but after spending so much time looking at them, TEGO.
And the reverse. And yes, I do suppose this could be for dance. If you look closely, you can see that the screwplate was stamped out of a scrapped badge. First time I'd seen that. |

Chuck,
It might be commemorating the 100th anniversary of one of the great theaters. I would suggest the Bolshoi theater in Moscow, or possible the Marinskiy or the Aleksndrinskiy theaters in St Petersburg. A close-up of the building on the badge might help figure it out. Marc |

Boslhoi Theater - Moscow
Marc,
Congratulations. What a guess ! In 1824, on the place of the burnt down Petrovsky Theatre а new Bolshoi theater, which was named Bolshoi Petrovsky, was built by architect О. Bove. The new edifice of the Bolshoi Theatre was opened on January 18, 1825 by the Prologue "The Triumph of the Muses" to music of Аlехеi Verstovsку and Alexander Aliabiev. The comparison between the building of the badge and the Bolshoi edifice is doubtless. Ch. |

Christophe,
That was the hint, of course. I did not precisely remember the date of opening, but knew it was around 1820's. Marc Last edited by Lapa; 08-18-2004 at 06:58 AM. |

Thank you, Christophe. I thought I recalled that the Bolshoi was built in something like 1780 or so, and so I ruled that out. But I had forgotten that it burned down. Thanks for putting this together for me and also for the interesting history.
During my one short visit to Moscow a couple of years ago, my host kind of casually mentioned "Do you think you'd like to visit the Bolshoi?" Well, sure. I did want to see it, so why not? Then he said "Good, because I've got loge seats for tonight." It was absolutely unforgettable. Chuck |
