The below list identifies the 15 officers who held the rank of General of the Army (GA) at the end of World War II/the Great Patriotic War (GPW) (2 SEP 45). Their respective dates of rank (DOR) are also included. For all practical purposes, a GA was equivalent in rank to a Branch Marshal.
MSUs who held this rank during the GPW (prior to their promotion to MSU) are identified in the Notes section.

Notes:

1) The eight MSUs who held GA rank included: Vasilevskiy (GA DOR: 18 JAN 43), Govorov (GA DOR: 17 NOV 43), Zhukov (GA DOR: 4 JUN 40), Konev (GA DOR: 26 AUG 43), Malinovskiy (GA DOR: 28 APR 43), Meretskov (GA DOR: 4 JUN 40), Rokossovskiy (GA DOR: 28 APR 43) and Tolbukhin (GA DOR: 21 SEP 43).

2) In addition to Zhukov and Meretskov, three additional officers held GA rank as of 22 JUN 41. They included: I. V. Tyulenev (GA DOR: 4 JUN 40), I. R. Apanasenko (GA DOR: 22 FEB 41) and D. G. Pavlov (DOR: 22 FEB 41). Pavlov was subsequently executed/purged on 27 JUL 41. Theretofore he commanded the Western Special Military District.
