Rectangular or pentagonal suspensions ? 4 or 5 sides ? What's the use ?

Rectangular or pentagonal suspensions ? 4 or 5 sides suspensions ?What's the use ?

We had this discussion in another Forum.

We can see a number of new awards from Ministries and Departments of the Russian Federation, with either 4 sides or 5 sides suspensions. Some have both...

What seems sure is that the use of the rectangular suspension is not used for the Federation of Russia orders and medals (except for Titles). It is scarcely used (but used) for the Ministries and Departments awards. And widely used for the un-official awards (question of style?)...

But, why the 2 different medal mounts?
Some medals issued in the last years first came out on the 4 side suspension only to appear on the 5 side one a little later.

What is the rational behind this ?

Is one for military personnel versus civilians? Or is one used for commemorative medals versus the one being used for merit medals? And why the same medal with both suspensions ? Is it linked to the issuing authority ?

Anybody out there know the answer? Many thanks in advance.

Cheers.

Ch.

Re: Rectangular or pentagonal suspensions ? 4 or 5 sides ? What's the use ?

I think I remember seeing something fairly recently that Russian non-State awards could no longer be made on pentagonal suspensions.

I also seem to remember that this was aimed at Umalotova awards and other such awards that have popped up. Just a few weeks ago I read a Russian-language article that was scandalized how some Russian organization was making its own awards and awarding them to famous people, including the Queen of England. Then the organization had a "whiff" of an official nature by taking pictures with the Queen and then began soliciting donations for charities and "selling" their awards.

Hi Paul,

Many thanks for your comments. :thumbsup

Do you remember or know if the fact that Russian non-State awards could no longer be made on pentagonal suspensions has been published somewhere, officially or in the press ?
In fact all this would come back to something similar to the use of badges / znakis in the USSR... by opposite to official awards on 5 side suspensions...

And what about the fact that Ministries or Departments use the rectangular one ?

And why some medal use both ?

I know, that makes a lot of questions... ;)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers.

Christophe,

I believe that official State awards (orders and medals, that is) are issued on 5-sided suspensions. Titles, as you mentioned, have always been issued on rectangular suspensions.

As far as I know, badges are issued on 4-sided suspensions, in accordance with their status of non-official State award. IMHO, that would include most ministries.

Ok, but why most ministries and departments medals are issued on pentagonal suspension ? Probably, and this seems consistent, because they are official...
