Hi Doc,

Can you be more specific? 1918-1922? 1924? Commanders?

Re: Early Rank Insignias

Hello Doug,
Perhaps Red Army wasn't the best name to use. I'm talking about the type of collar tabs and sleeve insignia of Georgy Zhukov and othe high ranking officers in 1940.

Re: Early Rank Insignias

Taz has put together an excellent Guide to Shoulderboards. I was hoping that someone would make one for the collar tabs and sleeve insigina. But for now I need the ranks stated above.

:thumbsup:thumbsup Doc

Re: Early Rank Insignias

Hi Doc,

Ok, here it is in basic form for the 1940 ranks:

Generals had anywhere from two to four stars (there was no ‘single star’ rank) on each collar rank (11,12,13)...the sleeve rank would be the same for any of these (14).

For five stars, General of the Army (8), the collar tab would be the same as the other Generals ranks, but the sleeve rank would become a bit “larger”.

Both the collar and cuff rank for Marshal of the USSR (7) were far more ornate.

Re: Early Rank Insignias

Thanks Doug!!! I finally found a full color chart in my library. It would be nice to have a rank chart of these insignias like the one Taz did for shoulderboards.

Re: Early Rank Insignias

No problem Doc, a full out guide to the M1940 rank insignia would be an interesting project!

You might also want to consult

Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics

The site can be a boit cranky to use, but it has good information.

(Although your period seems rather "late" to me  .)
