Civil War Veterans Badge.
Red Star, Civil War type 1918-1922
Has anyone details on this Order ? "An early forerunner of the Red Star for gallantry was awarded during the Civil War of 1918-1922. During this time, of conflict, units of the Red Army were self-supporting and produced their own insignia. The award consisted of a heavy silver disc with an outer wreath of laurel forming a circle, at the base of the wreath were the impressed letters "1919 CCCP 1922", and surimposed was a large red enameled five-pointed star with hammer and sickle in gold. The reverse is plain except for the impressed details : CCCP for Bravery 2nd Class, plus the award number and date of bestowal. The ribbon is red.(...) The early issue red Stars are believed to have been exchanged for the official Order of the Red Star in 1930." These informations come from John Clarke's book : "Gallantry Medals & Decorations of the World", published in 2001 by Leo Cooper. Is this story exact ? it is not mentioned in PMD's book, but in others ? Has someone more details on this medal ? A picture ? Many thanks. Ch. |

I've never heard of such award.
Nevertheless, suspension looks so out-of-time for Civil War period, it looks like something made after WW2. My guess it's some sort of Jubilee badge commemorating Civil war. William |

Christophe,
I have never seen this piece, but my guess is that it is either a commemorative badge, as William had suggested, or a fantsy item. They switched to H&S on the star only in 1922, before that it was hammer and plow. I believe this star conforms to 1932 regulations. Alexei |

Legend ?
William, Alexei,
Thanks for your comments. Without talking about the medal I posted, did you hear about the story itself ? Is this story real ? Or a legend ? I have not found any clue on it except in the book I mentioned... Thanks. Ch. |

Christophe,
While is true that some primitive and not commemorative and award jettons existed during that period, I do not believe that it is one of those. Alexei |

In an German military magazin (ca. 1995) a Dr. Attila Pandula writes a readers letter with the title unknown badge who ca help and there is an picture of the badge. He mentioned that the badge is made out of silver and on the backside is a number.
