Held der arbeit
http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/s...abour-gdr.html
The title was instituted on 27.07. 1950 and there were up to 50 awardings each year. The awardee was also given 10,000 East German mark and had priority for new housing and better holiday destinations. Awarded for merit in farming, industry, science and technology research. 1st Form A Silver Medal 34 mm in diameter. Obverse: Hammer, Dividers and 3 wheat sheafs. On the top edge are two rounded laurel branches and at the bottom the wording "Held der Arbeit". The reverse has the wording "Deutsche Demokratische Republik" with a peace dove inside. It was worn on a White 30 mm wide ribbon with two 5 mm wide edge stripes in black and red these were 5 mm from the ribbon edge. Various ways the medal was worn are: On a long ribbon through the medal ring. On a long ribbon with an extra horizontal ring through the medal loop Or on a rectangular suspension with the same ribbon 2nd Form In 1953 a gilded star replaced the medal, at its widest point 34 mm in diameter. Obverse: In the middle of the star is a 23 mm Medaillon with a laurel wreath, hammer, dividers and two wheat sheafs. Reverse: in the form of an open circle the wording "Held der Arbeit" On the top star point until 1972 a stamp (900) and on the bottom edge until 1976 the mint mark MB (Münze Berlin). The star is mounted on a 31,5 mm x 10 mm Rectangular suspension with a 25 mm Red ribbon. The dress ribbon is red with an 8 mm minature of the star. It is known that in 1953 there were also awardings on a 6 cm long Red ribbon. Stars with an engraved year on the reverse eg: 1951 are ones that have been exchanged for an earlier version. Eddie.

Well the two I found William were on one of the sites I know, the prices: €250 with box.
€450 boxed with doc and signature from Erik Honecker. Eddie.

Just to let you know William that the late issued pieces from this order called "Held der Arbeit" are made very cheap (Buntmetall). Here is some shot I made from the order from a collector friend. The order is dated from 1980.
When you hold one of these in your hand you are surprise to see how cheap this order was made in the later years of the GDR. Someone said on an other forum that the first version cost about 1500 EUR with document and those from Honecker era cost between 300 and 450 EUR depending if there is the case or the documents.

Re: Hero Socialist Labor DDR
Hello William - I am not sure if you are still asking about the numbers. I know of five former MfS officers who were presented this award during the Cold War.
