Home address: Penza Oblast, Sosnovoborsk raion, village of Shkudim. Father: Ivan Yakovlevich Korchev. Brief description of personal feat or merits: On March 11, 1945, near the village of Lüchentin, 1 kilometer south of the Baltic coast, a group of German infantry totalling up to 2000 men broke through our infantry and broke into the combat formations of the battalion. Deputy battalion commander for political affairs Major Korchev, being located at the firing position, prepared the men for repulsing the attack of the German infantry with side arms and grenades. Around 10:00 o'clock on March 11, 1945, forward observers, sent ahead by comrade Korchev, opened fire at the attacking Germans and reported to the firing positions that large German forces were located at a distance of 400 metres. Together with Major Gavrilov, comrade Korchev ordered the mortar layers to shoot at point-blank range, and the rest to prepare for repulsing the attack with their personal weapons. When the Germans were at a distance of 100 metres, comrade Korchev had his soldiers attack, after having shot 10 German soldiers himself with his submachine gun and having killed five Germans with a well-aimed grenade throw into a group of enemy soldiers. The enemy attack was repulsed. Up to 80 enemy soldiers and officers were killed. After 10 minutes a new group of Germans of up to 700 men from the Junker Berlin Naval Aviation School broke into the firing positions of the battalion. Major comrade Korchev arose with his entire stature from the entrenchment and with a voice full of will and confidence he shouted: "Comrades, not a step back! We will die, but not retreat!" The soldiers, inspired by the courageous example of comrade Korchev, engaged the enemy hand-to-hand, killing 92 Germans. During this battle comrade Korchev personally killed 6 German soldiers and 1 officer. On March 12, 1945, after having resupplied bullets and grenades, comrade Korchev organized a few companies from his batteries and started an assault of the firing positions. He beated the Germans out of the village of Lüchentin and went to the Baltic coast after having restored the previous situation. For personal courage, displayed in organizing a strong defense, and for training his men, fearless comrade Korchev deserves the Order of Lenin. Re: Red Banner,Baltic coast,223004
Judging by the recommendations in the long chain of command, it seems he was really close to getting a Lenin.
Did anyone else ever see a quote in a citation? I think it's pretty cool! |

Re: Red Banner,Baltic coast,223004
Apparently he also taught his subordinates to scream. :) This is his OPW2 citation:
Since the moment the battalion has been formed comrade Korchev has been serving in the regiment. During this period he showed himself a business-like, sophisticated, political, and courageous combat commander. On July 4, 1944 the division actively occupied defensive positions near Kovel. Comrade Korchev aimed the party and Komsomol organisation at the execution of the commander's order and mobilized the men to organize an honest defense. Scouts accurately studied the enemy front line and located the enemy firing positions. During the offensive the party-political activities continued uninterruptedly. Just in the period of offensives between July 5 and August 25, 1944, 26 people were accepted into the party. All young adults of Komsomol age were made members of the Komsomol. The Komsomol organization now consists of 52 people, and the party organization of 110 people. As a result of the day-to-day party-political activities, the communists and other men displayed examples of courage in combat. Near the village of Gorodelets, during the breakthrough of the enemy front line, the deep German defense lines, between July 5 and 8, 1944, the battalion destroyed 3 81.4 mm and 2 120 mm mortar batteries, 9 machine gun positions, and killed 150 soldiers. Near Paryduba the battalion destroyed 4 enemy 81.4 mm and 3 120 mm mortar batteries, 10 machine gun positions, and up to 200 soldiers and officers. During the fighting on the bridgehead on the left shore of the Vistula River between August 19 and 28, 1944, the battalion destroyed 14 enemy machine gun positions, 4 81.4 mm and 5 120 mm mortar batteries, 2 anti-tank guns, put 1 tank out of action, and killed up to 18 soldiers and officers. On August 27, 1944, near the village of Khatkovska Volya on the right shore of the Radomka River, large enemy forces counterattacked and put pressure on our infantry. While screaming "Ura", "For the motherland" and "For Stalin", the communists of the battalion's headquarters platoons threw themselves into the attack. The enemy was hurled back, as a result of which the German attack broke down and the front line situation of the battalion that was being supported was restored by the communist mortar troops. During the fighting 145 men of the battalion were awarded orders and medals. Comrade Korchev is a strong-willed commander and political officer, capable of taking initiatives. He is always located in the combat formations, together with his soldiers. He can always be seen where the combat circumstances are the most difficult. In my opinion comrade Korchev deserves the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class. Commander of the 135th Mortar Regiment Lieutenant Colonel [signed] /Vasilyev/ August 31, 1944 |

Re: Red Banner,223004,135th Mortar Regiment,Baltic Coast
Here is the original citation. Also awarded an OPW1'85.
I haven't found quotes too rare to find but very rarely more than a "For Homeland! - For Stalin!". The noise of modern industrialised warfare is not conducive to making long "I may have the body of......" type speeches. Then again nor is a brief citation.
