Romanian Hero Stars were issued in different metal based on the rank of the recepient.
Most were made of non-precious metal (bronze or tombac), but some were minted in real gold. Rumor is that gold ones were issued to Chauchescu family members and top Romanian party leaders.
Stars in my collection aren't made of gold, but I've seen gold ones on a show at dealer in Romanian awards.

This is of a 2nd later issue of this highest Government and State award decoration and it is gold plated / gilted silver with synthetic diamonds and a ruby in the top hanger.
There were 3 types of this star - some of the first issues were from real solid gold with brilliant stones, the later 2nd issue was gold plated silver and the last issues were gold plated bronze.
Both of the later issues had synthetic stones.
