Alexei,
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, he received actually two old fashioned letters :) you can see one of the letters in this digest article: http://www.soviet-awards.com/digest/hero...reply1.htm Actually the article above was the follow-up to an earlier article. I don't show the letter from the Chief Engineer of the Moscow Mint, but I do include what the letter says. The letter shown in the above article is from an official at the Administration of the Russian Federation for State Decorations Art

Art,
Thanks. I guess things are changing in Russia after all. An interesting letter, which still didn't change my position on the Hero copies :) Alexei QUOTE=Art]Alexei, Sorry for the late reply. Art,
We should probably continue this in another thread, but, yes, that's correct. We now know that mints never produced those copies and hence they were never officially (by the central Government) authorised and presented to the HSUs. At the same time I have seen two copies, one with minor and the other with significant wear and patina. Both were goldplated (gold partly worn on both) and both were stamped, not hand made by some local goldsmith or handy man. This of course requires fairly sofisticated production facilities, that in the Soviet times could not have been in private hands. So somewhere, somehow somebody must have authorized those copies to be made for every day wear. I personally know a HSU and a famous writer, who had shown me his copy, and said that they (meaning HSUs) were able to obtain them. Unfortunately it was not appropriate to ask more questions at the time. So I guess the research still continues, at least for me. Alexei

Right, we are getting off topic in this thread. The research Henry did regarding the existence of a government issued copy for an HSU star concluded that there was no government issued copy. Of course that doesn't mean copies weren't worn. The post-Soviet government recommended all HSU's wear copies because of the increased incidents of theft. I show a couple of these close-up in the article. These were made in varying levels of quality, but of the HSU's Henry personally interviewed, they were all fairly crude and made by anyone who worked in metal. One even looked like gold-plated lead.
In one case, the HSU was so overwhelmed by the quality of the modern copy Henry had shown her, he felt obligated to leave it with her as a gift. Art
