A very nice immediate post-war shot of GA (later MSU) Sokolovskiy in his M1945 VP uniform. The picture is currently available on a well-known auction site. Note his wear of both the first and second types of the Order of Suvorov 1st Class.
I have "Heroines of the Soviet Union 1941-45" on Osprey Elite series.
For a 64 pages book, I find it interesting, with a few nice biographies of some Heroines, and also a complete list of Heroines of the SU, containing the Name, Nationality, Date she was awarded the HSU and Comments. Quite a few nice pictures of those Heroines for which there is a biography and a few nice illustrations.
So I guess it's worth while.
But you ask about a "set of books". I didn't know there were more from Henry on Osprey series! Can you please name the others?
On the list at the end of my book, with the Titles of other Osprey books I can't find one called "Heroes of the Soviet Union" !
So unless Henry wrote other books for Osprey, with completely different titles, this one previously mentioned is the only one I know from Henry Sakaida.
Maybe Henry himself can help us if he reads these lines :)
Or do any other members of the Forum have any additional info about this?
Thanks a lot, I'll check their site.
Unfortunatelly, on my book, the last Elite series title listed is 087, so obviously couldn't find Elite 111 :)
Anyway, I would recommend the one I have, for female Heroes of the SU.
Of course it's not a 400 pages book, it's just a small Osprey book so one can't expect to have the best book around for the price we pay! ;)
Col. Valery Brukov arrived in Afghanistan just 30 days after your father died whem was shot down while flying your Mi-8 Helicopter in a insertion troops mission. After flying several mission like a Mi-24 Hind Pilot, he was tranfered to the ground forces, acting like FAC (Foward Air Controler) directing air suport fire to a Spetznas Platoon. In your last mission, his platoon climbed one hill and found a camo bunker with heavy machine guns, after searching in the area he steped in a land mine and lost both legs. This unfortunately
whas your ticket to home, but at least he recived de Gold Star and became an HSU ! After come back to russia, he stayed in the air force and helped to develop new FAC techinics, and planed several missions of atack in Chechnya, becoming Comander of a Frontal Aviation Squadron.
The men HEROES OF THE SOVIET UNION came out in October 2004 and I heard that it is selling well. I wish I could have included alot more Heroes, but I was limited by Osprey's cookie-cutter format. So what I had to do was to sit down and try to add variety...from Heroes involved in hand-to-hand combat, to Partisans, snipers, spies, etc.
I made a major blunder in HEROINES OF THE SOVIET UNION, in the Introduction, paragraph 4 where I wrote..."His wife, Nadezhda Krupskaya..." Actually, it should have been ..."Lenin's wife!" Stalin's wife committed suicide. My fault 100%. If you find any errors, but sure to post it here for all to see. No matter how hard one tries, errors still crop up.
I know some of you are budding writers and Osprey is always looking for new authors. Unfortunately, they pay $4800 and they own the copyright. If you have a good paying day job, love to write, and have some knowledge in your particular field, you might want to consider them. I'm a hobby writer, so it fit right in.
Some titles that I would like to see: Marshals of the Soviet Union; Heroes of Khalkan Gol and Lake Khassan; Heroes of the Winter War, Kosomol and Pioneer Heroes of the Great Patriotic War; Sniper Heroes, Soviet Heroes of the Afghan War; Soviet Field Medics of the Great Patriotic War, etc.
Thank you very much!

Henry,
Thank you very much for the clarifications.
I will look for your Heroes of the Soviet Union, hope it is as interesting as the one I have. Does it also contains a Complete list, as for the Heroines?
