Photographs Of Recipients Of Soviet Awards/Service Personnel.
Here is a nice pic of Zhukov, not wearing all his orders and medals, but his ribbon bars.

Check out the ribbon configuration on the 20 year GPW. I believe the stripe on the left fold should be out board.

I am new to the forum and have enjoyed reading your thoughts.

This photo is very nice, but is dated between 9 May 1945 (date of creation of the Medal for Victory over Germany - the last one visible on Zhukov's chest) and 9 june 1945 (Medal for the Conquest of Berlin - that does not appear). The 4th HSU and the 4th Lenin (both awarded in 1956), as well as the 3rd Red Banner -awarded in 1949), are also not here.

It would really be interesting to find a good colour "recent" pic of Zhukov.

Cheers.

Chris:

I am glad you commented on this picture. Nobody else seemed to care about it. :( As I wrote earlier, it is Zhukov's best in my opinion. First, this is the perfect image of Marshal of Victory as he is often called in Russia. The photo was taken a few days after the back of the Nazi beast was broken. He is wearing the Victory Parade uniform and all his decorations that he earned during the war. You mentioned that he is missing "Capture of Berlin" medal and it is a drawback but all his major awards are here: 3 HSU stars, 2 Victories, and 2 Suvorovs. Second, his facial expression and pose reveal confidence and strength of his character. Here he is at the zenith of his glory. With documents on his table and a pen in his hand, he appears to be taking a second from his important business to pose for the photographer. This image is a contrast to his later pictures where he looks as a frail old man, a shadow of his magnificent past. Frankly, I don't miss seeing his 4th HSU star, o. of L and RB. RB was probably length of service award. 4th star is highly controversial. Zhukov got it on his 60th birthday. HSU title should not be a birthday gift even for a man as great as he was. Besides, o. of Lenin was supposed to be given with the first HSU star only.

On later photographs with all 4 stars, he is usually wearing a bar that connects 4 suspensions together. Connecting links look ugly to me.

These are thoughts that came to my mind while looking at this pic :)

Great photo! Makes me me miss the uniform i had that was close to identical to it. Its an M1940 admirals parade uniform; i used to have one for an Engineering Admiral before I sold off my collection; it was superb. :(

Paul McDaniel has a really nice shot of Tributs in his M1945 uniform.

Is that the standard Soviet naval salute he's using in this photo? Navies all around the world seemed to have salutes differnet than the usual.
I believe the Kriegsmarine used the traditional British style salute even for a short while after WW2 started.

This officer seems to have some sort of orders-rack in use on his uniform, maybe so he doesn't have to put holes in the tunic? Is this a common device?

Nack,

An NCO would have an officer's classification badge.

Nack Wrote:Anyone have a scan of a picture of a Soviet army NCO wearing an excellent soldier badge, a em classification badge, a sports badge and an extended service wing? I have a tunic that I suspect once had all these badges, but I'm not sure where the extended service wing was positioned, and the general placement of the other badges. Can anyone help? Thanks.
