Amen, brother! Is there one, single, book that has influenced a specific collecting catagory like The Red Book has? Seriously? I can't really think of any.

I'll have to agree with that. The book is my primary source. Although I have five other Soviet ODM books including the two volume Shishkov and Muzalevsky set...The book I reach for first is the PMD>

Likewise I have several books some in English some in Russian (the fotos are in English ), but McDaniel and Schmitt did a wonderful job for the English reading collector. It is the best investment I made related to research and understanding the background of Soviet orders and medals.
A collector without their book is like a ship without a rudder. :thumbsup
I do not want to overlook all of the great websites that other collectors have labored on to share their knowledge.
I'm looking forward to getting a copy of Mr. Schmitt's new book! I've got several awards that I would like to have researched. Currently, I've got a researcher checking out the serial number of my Type 3 Nevsky.
In addition to Soviet awards, and East German awards, I've fairly recently branched out to include Hungarian awards. Hopefully there will be reference material out of Hungarian awards as well.

Me, too! I saw some sample pages of said book and it looks to be the same format as The Red Book; ie. big and glossy, lotsa info and lotsa pictures.
I talked to the other Paul (McDaniel) a month or two ago via email and asked him if he/they had any plans for a revised edition of The Red Book. Sadly, he said "No plans to do another edition. Too much other stuff going on.".
I did the same as above yesterday and today with my labor medals.
Here's three images of them in order.
The last image is my two projects 'on the wall'.
They hang on the wall just to the center-right of my desk/comp-work-station. From there I can lean back and enjoy them a lot more than before when they were hidden away in a box under the dresser.

Sadly the glue has failed after only 12 days.
See the images below where the weight of a medal or two is pulling the backing cloth off the backing board.
What a waste of time, resources and effort.
I feel like chucking this whole thing in the damn dumpster. :angerr
