Medal "For Combat Merits".
#71
This might seem too absurd to be true but a while back, on a differnt forum, I inquired about aging a new ribbon. One guy told me to put the ribbon in my shoe and wear it to work for a day. I did. The results weren't totally what I wanted but the wear was there.
If you've got a lenght or two of new (or repro) DoS ribbon maybe trying a slight bleaching to tone down the bright colors and then a bath in water and dirt to give it some grubbiness.
Or just wait until you find a hammered DoS that's been remounted on a cheap aluminum suspension (I've got a DoBudapest like that), use that hammered ribbon on the bar, and put the new ribbon on the new single suspension DoS.
There's an outside chance that I could find such a "hammered" DoS if ya want me to look.
Then again there's the majority who'd say that we'd be messing with history by fooling around with stuff like this.

But I'll leave it as is for now. Will look through my other defense medals to see if better candidate. For that matter, another combat merit would do in that slot as well. Wonder what was there in the first place....

I picked this little guy up yesterday. The hand-engraving added to the reverse is a nice local Uzbek touch. It's first time I've seen something like this, and relatively low serial number (487,051) is a small bonus.

Nice one,

But still much better than the one I bought a week ago as part of a set.
Much thicker than an original and no red enamel

That is about the weirdest thing I've seen done.

The decision to research is an individual's determination, but if there is no medal I don't see a lot of reason to spend $100 on more paperwork.

Although your other two medals' certificates could render more clues, I would say, in order of probability from most likely to least likely, this particular award was given for long service, Japan, Germany, something else.

I've always liked these two CSMs for their appearance; one's really dark and the other looks like I minted it yesterday (I didn't, so don't ask me for one Normsky! :D).
Since I got loads of time on my hands these days and things are slow here again I thought I'd stir the pot. :p
