Visiting And Shopping Inside And Outside The Former Soviet Union.
Very cool! I did my MA research on North Carolina Civil Defense during the Kennedy Administration. As a result, I visited a few fallout shelters in North Carolina and now have a wall full of fallout shelter, shelter, or civil defense related signs Smile

Pastfinder, any chance of a pic of that wall? It would be a nostalgic view of those "Duck, and cover" days.

Now that would have been a cool tour. When I visited Moscow that was not a tourist stop. Would be great to see.

I don't have them all together like I once did (I moved a few weeks back), but I'll try to post a pic or two of some of them.

Thanks pastfinder, I'd like to see some of those. I remember one on the barber shop my dad took me to as a boy. This place was just outside of the city limits and it just looked like an old two story building that looked like it would fall apart if the wind blew too hard. Now I wish I had a picture of this but sadly, all is gone, including the sign. Of course downtown had a lot of these signs in stronger and more significant buildings but these signs are now gone too.

Not a problem. Here are parts of my sign collection.

In the large photo, are signs from France, Poland, Russia, and the U.S. from World War II to the early 1960s. Prior to the National Fallout Shelter Survey (fall of 1961 continuing into 1970), all states could use their own sign designs. After this, all the signs were standardized under the Department of Defense. These are the yellow and black "Fallout Shelter" signs. The larger, 20" x 14" was intended to be displayed outside of buildings. A smaller 10" x 14" sign was used inside of buildings to direct people to the designated shelter. Later the sign was remade as a series of stickers to be placed on doors and windows to indicate the presence of shelters.

Point being, any "S" shelter sign is generally from the 1950s period. My Air Raid Warden sign is from World War II.

Another fun CD item I have is not a sign but a Soviet-era poster. I have several in a double glass frame. Thought yall would enjoy Smile

OK,

Here are some mildly interesting items. In particular is the badge with the #2 on it. I've some of these badge, but not one with the #2; which is 'glued' on. Interesting connecting chain.
