Translation of 1958 regulations
#61
i certainly could !!

a lot of naval terms in Russia are in fact dutch.
this is because of Peter the great bringing in dutch naval people to teach the Russians.
this happened way back around 1500 or so ,, because the Netherlands was the best world going sailing country back than.

till this day the terms for sails and ropes and many many many more are still dutch.

I always thought all this names come from German. Ihave heard that Peter the Great has invited specialists from the west, but it always semed obvious to me that they were german. Now I am starting to doubt about german origin of polish naval terms...
Anyway, is there any english word for that thning? "Mine surrounded by minrep" doesn't look good...

Al-muell Wrote:OK, but here it stands for a thing (mine surrounded by minrep) - could it be, that this name also stand for a thing used to remove the mines? It would make sense, esp. that foreign words aren't uncommon in Russian.

Got a picture?

I would just call this a "naval mine" or "naval mine device" if you want to imply the cable surrounding it.

I don't want to. But I would prefer to keep the original description intact. If not for that, I would just write "Naval mine", "sea mine" or simply "mine"

That's what it's called?
Thanks! I will change that.
