How much would that value increase if we add the bribes?
There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye

I would pay any bribe not to go to Russian prison... :banghead
Mind you, most foreigners in Russian prisons are seen as cash cows, and the families constantly have to bribe the prison officials. Tig Hague, whose book I referenced, had a year added to his sentence in Siberia (the camp commandant has the ability to extend sentences, outside court) and had his family spend over $100,000 to get him out.

Not so different to Uncle Joe´s era...
Now I definitely wouldn´t like to deal with a russian cop for nothing. Ever.

Makes me glad that Russian customs didn't find the Defense of Leningrad medal I had in my backpack when I left St. Petersburg and gives me a shiver to think of what the consequences would have been if they had.

in xSoviet prisons if a person not form particular group of organise crime is a cash cow this way or other, of course it works very well with foreigners, who don't know some non-written rules of prison and scared to dead.

Hi gents,

I thought it was only Russia that forbade the export of "objects of historical value" unless an unreasonable tariff was paid. However, I found this article about a recent package prevented from being mailed from the Ukraine:

Таможенники обнаружили контрабанду орденов и медалей
I am pretty sure I saw these on ebay--the Bravery with the wrong ribbon and the ORB with the stained ribbon.. Do you guys have more info on the customs/export laws in the former USSR republics?

For our non-Russian speakers, the article says that the customs officials intercepted airmail from the Ukraine to Sweden and the USA containing 9 awards, in violation of the Ukraine customs code on the export of forbidden objects.

I am not that surprised... but on the other hand, I am not the one crying blood at this moment for the awards lost to customs either.
