Please, allow me to add my 5 kopeek regarding the general difference between 6-sided and 4-sided badges. The earlier were issued to graduates of Technikum which was roughly an equivalent of a technical school. The latter were given to graduates of higher learning establishments: institutes and universities.
I don't think there is a difference between engineering and railroad badges. The symbol below the Soviet Insignia signifies a techinical field in general, not specifically rail-road or a certain engineering branch.
