Most people in the hobby just assemble and paint the whole thing, but when you reach the level of the people who make dioramas like that "Fall of the Reich", you have to do a lot of scratch building.
Of course you have a large variety of buildings (mainly in plastic or plaster) and vehicles, as well as soldiers and weapons (usually in plastic or resin). But in many cases you have to modify a lot of things, for example create new arms or legs for soldiers to adapt them to your project, or improve the buildings by adding details, etc.

1/35 scale is the best for these dioramas, but I remember doing a few on 1/72 scale too!...
Of course my eyes were in much better shape than these days...
Then you have the 120mm or 200mm figures too, there you can do really nice things :thumbsup See pics below.
Adolph Galland, 200mm.
A crew member of the Memphis Belle, 120mm.
American fighter pilot, 120mm.
PS: I have exactly the same leather jacket, a Type A 2. Saw once one in the Smithsonian, it was so worn it looked like a rag!
Norman... 120mm.
A simple example of a 1/35 scale diorama.
