In general, I'd always advise to give preference to "higher end" items first. Of course financial considerations come into play, but the "simple" medals tend to stay relatively cheap and easy to acquire so you'll still be able to get them easily 1-2-5 years from now whereas with the more expensive items you never know.
Obviously, financial considerations come into play but I've rarely regretted NOT purchasing an easy to get medal as opposed to certainly regretting not biting the bullet on something more expensive. Even then, I'd suggest getting the easy to get medals as a documented group - which can even mean that you'll get them cheaper than if you get them all seperately!
