Quote:Eric, it is a nice looking badge in what appears to be excellent condition (though I don't think the screw nut is original, but that hardly matters in my book:).Hiya Phil, long time, no chat. :/ The screwnut does look out of place, but, I have seen another with the exact same nut.
Maybe this is from the era when they were transitioning from screwback to pinback? Avers has this, and a bunch more under the general heading '50s - 80s' badges and I get a 70s vibe from the materials and finish although the 4 rivets tend to make me think earier than that.
Quote:I also agree with the idea that it is a grad badge rather than a popaganda merit badge. I've been thinking about these "Mining Institutes" and I have the feeling that the people who attended these higher education academies were more of the engineering side of mining rather than teaching large numbers of people how to dig.I concur, this ain't for your average tunnel rat. This badge went on the lapel of a suit of white-collar guy. Maybe a 'college boy' who went out to Siberia to make a name for himself. :chuckle
BTW, about 30mm x 40mm. Brass and enamel, according to A8.
