This is one of those posts most intelligent people would prevent themselves from submitting. Fortunately, I'm not most intelligent people.
Though I've only been taking the collecting of the O&Ms seriously for a few years (badges have been my thing for much longer), and even though I've heard it said many different ways without actually putting the 2 and the other 2 together to get 5, I finally understand something on a fundamental, basic ("ah-ha") level. And it's so simple that it is embarrassing, but for any of the people new to this field putting it this simply might be helpful:
Mints produced whole batches of numbered orders and some medals. They were not given out in the order they were minted.:o Some batches went to one place, others to other places and were distributed as needed. The exceptions are the duplicate and subsequent awards of the same order(s).
It seems so simple, but I've been used to the old KGB approach - mint the badge, then number it for the man/woman (which isn't a truism either, but close) that it has taken this long to sink in all the way to "the core" of my brain. It just took watching this thread grow as Alexei added numbers and dates awarded for the notion to take root. Thanks Alexei for doing what you do.
