Does anyone have a suggestion about how to go about smoothing the ribbon out? There's not enough to use an iron on (and I would worry about damage). Just hanging it by the pin doesn't look like it will fix the problem because the medal does not weigh very much. I could pin it stretched out, but it would look odd. Any thoughts?

You might try steam. If you have a tea kettle you could hold it in front of the spout while the water is boiling to get it to smooth out and then try pressing it under some heavy books.
