I have never seen a "for service" Red Banner (or practically any "main stream" award) given to someone for service in state intelligence/security agencies. I can picture this captain as a bureaucrat and perhaps a teacher of the Soviet kind of "political correctness" - giving that phrase a whole new meaning.
I doubt if he even did any real field work at all with the possible exception of WWII, but even during that desperate time, when even the aged or very young were drafted or volunteered, I believe this guy would have served his part in an office rather than in a tank or fox hole.
Regardless, if we're reading about it, his life was probably not top secret.
Do you suppose you will be getting anything more on this fellow?
